Steve McClaren led Twente to the title.

Ajax praised FC Twente as worthy champions after the Amsterdammers were pipped to the Eredivisie title by Steve McClaren's men.

Twente won 2-0 at NAC Breda on Sunday to finish the season one point ahead of Martin Jol's side, who did their bit with a 4-1 success at NEC Nijmegen.

Ajax put Twente under pressure until the end, finishing the season with 14 straight league wins in which they scored 50 and conceded three, but Twente held their nerve when it mattered.

And the champions celebrated their first ever title with an open-top bus ride back to Enschede as supporters lined the side of the motorway and bridges to salute the players

"At the end, we left points on the table this season. FC Twente are therefore the rightful champions", Demy de Zeeuw said on www.ajax.nl.

Luis Suarez, who finished the season with 35 goals, added: "Twente are the rightful champions, and I congratulate them."

Twente midfielder Theo Janssen paid tribute to McClaren's influence as the former England boss, who has now been linked in the German and English press with a move to German side Wolfsburg, restored a reputation that was left in tatters following the failure to qualify for Euro 2008.

"This was not an easy season for me. The coach was behind me and has kept faith in me. That is very important to me," Janssen said on www.fctwente.nl.

Bryan Ruiz, who opened the scoring against NAC with his 24th of the season, added: "This is really a dream come true.

"This is my first season here and immediately we are champions."

The win over NAC was striker Blaise Nkufo's last game for Twente before moving to Major League Soccer team Seattle Sounders this summer.

"This is a really incredible way to end my time at Twente," said the Switzerland striker, who has been at the club for seven years.

"The title did not fall from the sky. We got to this level step by step. Twente are just a very good team."

Steve McClaren linked with Wolfsburg

Wolfsburg hope to name their new coach this week with Steve McClaren reportedly the preferred choice following his title triumph in Holland.

The former England manager guided FC Twente to their first ever Eredivisie title with a 2-0 success at NAC Breda on Sunday.

Beating the likes of Ajax and PSV Eindhoven to the title has seen McClaren's stock rise across Europe and reports in England and Germany have linked him with a move to the Volkswagen Arena as a successor to interim boss Lorenz-Gunther Kostner.

The Wolves were reportedly close to recruiting former Liverpool boss Gerard Houllier only for the deal to fall through.

Wolfsburg general manager Dieter Hoeness told Kicker: "It is planned that we will present the new man this week."

Hoeness insisted, though, they would not be rushed into revealing his identity.

"If it's Friday, Saturday or Sunday, we don't care. Only when everything is cleanly concluded will we make the name known," he added in the Bild newspaper.

The Wolves, last year's Bundesliga champions, have endured a disappointing season and can finish no higher than eighth, meaning McClaren, who extended his contract in Enschede only last October, would be sacrificing the chance of Champions League football were he to join them.

They sacked Armin Veh, only appointed as coach last summer, in January, and are likely to lose star striker Edin Dzeko this summer.

McClaren's predecessor as Twente coach Fred Rutten left the club for the Bundesliga, joining Schalke in 2008, only to be sacked before the end of his first season.

Twente, though, will do all they can to keep hold of their man.

"We hope he stays for a long time," chairman Joop Munsterman said on Sky Sports News.

FC Twente coach Steve McClaren handed single ban

FC Twente coach Steve McClaren has been handed a one-match touchline ban by the Dutch FA.

The Englishman was punished for entering the pitch during the 1-1 draw with Feyenoord last weekend, after becoming incensed at a decision made by referee Roelof Luinge.

McClaren was sent to the stands by Luinge, but the KNVB's disciplinary commission have decided to ban him for his actions.

Twente have until Thursday to appeal the decision, which could see McClaren miss the home clash with FC Utrecht on September 12.
