Cesc Fabregas wanted by Barca

Fabregas
Barcelona president Joan Laporta is still hopeful of persuading Arsenal to part with Cesc Fabregas despite having a 35million offer for the Spain international rejected this week.

Fabregas has long been linked with a return to Barca, the club where he plied his trade as a youngster before moving to the Gunners seven years ago.

The 23-year-old is under contract to Arsenal until the summer of 2015 but last month expressed his desire to head back to the Nou Camp at a promotional event in the Catalan capital.

Barca are keen to make that wish become reality, and on Tuesday submitted a written offer to Arsenal that Laporta has said was worth 35million euros.

Laporta said: "It's a price that we consider to be his market value. Arsenal have rejected it. Now the sporting director (Txiki Begiristain) must decide what should be the next step.

"We are in negotiations and we'll see how they turn out. At times, these operations are resolved at one speed, and others at another.

"We have to do everything we can to convince them (Arsenal) that the best thing for all is to reach an agreement," Laporta was quoted as saying by Spanish daily AS.

The outgoing Barca president remains optimistic the Primera Division champions will be able to secure the services of the Arsenal skipper, but admits it may not be easy persuading the Gunners to let their prize asset leave.

"The club have full confidence that Arsenal will end up understanding the situation," Laporta said.

Laporta also feels that the ideal situation for Fabregas would be to "have the transfer closed as soon as possible, before the start of the World Cup".

"But it will be difficult because Arsenal are entitled to stand firm and that must be respected."

Laporta also played down suggestions that Fabregas could invoke FIFA's Article 17 rule to force his exit from the Emirates Stadium.

Article 17 regards compensation for breach of contract.

"I'm not sure if Cesc will take this course, but we want to find an agreement by talking with Arsenal," said Laporta.

"We respect Arsenal a lot, we must have in-depth dialogue and follow this path."

Didier Drogba injury worry.

Drogba
The Ivory Coast Football Federation have confirmed captain Didier Drogba has broken his arm but are still not ruling him out of the World Cup.

Drogba was forced out of the Ivorians' World Cup warm-up game against Japan in Sion in the 17th minute, leaving the field clutching his right arm.

There were fears the Chelsea striker would miss the World Cup but the federation are confident Drogba will be able to play some part in the finals.

A statement released to Press Association Sport read: "He was taken urgently to a medical centre in Sion, where x-rays revealed a fracture in the player's right forearm area.

"Didier Drogba's state of health is the object of all the attention of the Elephants' medical staff and of distinguished specialists.

"The Ivory Coast Football Federation stress that the striker Didier Drogba has not, for the moment, been ruled out of the 2010 World Cup."

Reports suggest Drogba is currently undergoing surgery.

Earlier in the day a national federation spokesman revealed they are awaiting further medical tests but claimed Drogba could even feature when they kick off their World Cup campaign against Portugal on June 15.

"He's not at all out of the World Cup," he told Press Association Sport. "He can still play.

"We don't know if he will be able to play the first game - that depends on the verdict of the medical team.

"But he's definitely not out (of the tournament)."

It is nevertheless a devastating blow to Ivory Coast's hopes of qualifying from Group G which, in addition to Portugal, also contains Brazil and North Korea.

Drogba has scored 44 goals in 69 appearances for his country and hit 37 for Chelsea in all competitions as Carlo Ancelotti's men landed the Barclays Premier League and FA Cup double last season.

Ivory Coast coach Sven-Goran Eriksson said after the game: "It's an elbow injury for sure. How bad it is, I don't know. He had a lot of pain."

Drogba went down clutching his arm following a challenge from Japan central defender Tulio shortly after giving the Elephants the lead.

"Of course I am worried, he's our captain and one of the best players in the world," added former England boss Eriksson, who attached no blame to Tulio.

"It was unlucky, he didn't want to hurt anyone. Football is a game of contact."

Ivory Coast ended up winning the game against Japan 2-0 with Manchester City defender Kolo Toure adding a late second.

Rio Ferdinand out of World Cup

Rio Ferdinand
One day after his arrival in South Africa, England skipper Rio Ferdinand must prepare to fly home after he was ruled out of the World Cup with a knee injury.

Ferdinand suffered the injury in training on Friday morning and was sent straight to the local Netcare Fearncrest Hospital for a scan.

Both doctors travelling with the England team assessed the severity of the problem and came to the same conclusion; the Manchester United man would play no part in the competition.

"Further to a scan arranged by the England medical staff immediately after training on Friday afternoon, Rio has been ruled out for 4-6 weeks and will therefore unfortunately miss the World Cup," said a statement.

"Tottenham Hotspur's Michael Dawson has been contacted and will fly to South Africa.

"Steven Gerrard will lead the England team as captain in the tournament."

It is a grievous blow for coach Fabio Capello, who rated Ferdinand as one of the most influential players in his squad as well as a lynchpin in his defence.

He must now decide who to replace Ferdinand with, having added Dawson to a list of central defenders that also includes Ledley King, Matthew Upson and Jamie Carragher.

"It is obviously bad news and everyone with the squad is very disappointed and sorry for Rio," said Capello.

"It was an accidental injury in training, but had nothing to do with the pitch."

Manchester United will decide whether the injury was in any way related to the long-standing back problems that condemned Ferdinand to spend so much of this season on the sidelines.

Latterly, he missed a couple of games with a groin problem picked up during a match at Blackburn, although he has spent the past two weeks insisting he was over all his fitness issues.

Ferdinand had also opted not to speak too extensively about having the chance to emulate another former West Ham player, Bobby Moore, by lifting the World Cup.

"I have always said I would not let myself get too emotionally involved with situations and scenarios for fear that it might not happen or I might not achieve the goals I set out to achieve," he said during England's recent altitude training camp in Austria.

"I am not letting myself think what it would be like to be captain at the World Cup or lift the trophy. Maybe it is just superstition."

Those worries, though, have now come true, which must have an adverse effect on England's chances of landing the biggest prize in the game in Johannesburg on July 11.

Upson has started nine of the last 17 internationals while King has forced his way into Capello's thinking despite his long-term knee problem.

King has impressed for Tottenham this season and did train this morning. By his own admission he looked far from convincing in the recent friendly with Mexico at Wembley, but he would be the current favourite to partner John Terry in the Group C opener against the United States in Rustenburg on June 12.

Capello has pencilled Carragher in as the back-up right-back to Anfield team-mate Glen Johnson, while Dawson was named in Capello's initial party of 30 for the finals but was excluded from the final 23 after not playing against either Mexico at Wembley or Japan in Graz.

He has had an outstanding season at Tottenham, often alongside King, although he is yet to make his bow at international level and - while he was talking in relation to Adam Johnson - Capello has already spoken of the difficulty uncapped players have in stepping up to international level at such an important time.

Having to wrestle with such problems was surely not what was going through Capello's mind a few hours earlier when he spoke to David Cameron and accepted the Prime Minister's best wishes.

Maicon wants to join Mourinho in Madrid

Maicon
Inter Milan defender Maicon would relish the chance to follow former coach Jose Mourinho to Real Madrid.

The 28-year-old has been heavily linked with a move to the Spanish capital in the wake of Mourinho's switch from Inter to the Bernabeu.

Manchester City are also believed to be be interested in the Brazil full-back, but Maicon has his sights set on a move to Madrid.

He told Spanish daily AS: "What I want is to play at Madrid and for me it would be an honour to be able to do that because I've already said it would be a great opportunity in my career.

"With Manchester City I have nothing (agreed), I can assure."

Given the choice between the two clubs, he added: "I'm going to say it very clearly so there are no misunderstandings. I want to play at Madrid, I don't want to go to Manchester City.

"Moreover, I repeat that I have nothing (agreed) with the English club."

Regarding Mourinho, who led Inter to Serie A, Coppa Italia and Champions League glory in 2009/10, Maicon said: "Mourinho is a great coach and I don't think anybody can dispute that.

"I have a great relationship with him and for me it would be nice to be able to play under him again.

"We have won many things things together and I hope to be able to repeat that. He's one of the best coaches that I've come across in my life."

However, while speculation persists about where he will be playing his club football next season, Maicon's thoughts are now focused on the upcoming World Cup.

"My priority right now is Brazil and to go into the World Cup in the best form possible," he said.

"Hopefully we will have a great tournament and we can finish it as champions.

"But I will say that it makes me proud that a club like Real Madrid are interested in signing me.

"It's something very important and it fills me with hope but, I repeat, my priority now is Brazil."

Rafael Benitez - Inter Milan interested

Inter Milan have expressed admiration for Rafa Benitez, who has left Liverpool by mutual consent.

The Serie A club are seeking a new manager following Jose Mourinho's move to Real Madrid.

There has been plenty of speculation about who will fill the vacant Inter position, particularly since England boss Fabio Capello dismissed links with the Italian club.

But Benitez holds extra appeal for the Giuseppe Meazza outfit after guiding the Reds to victory over Inter's fierce rivals AC Milan in the 2005 Champions League final in Istanbul.

"We really like Rafa Benitez and he is in our favour since the Champions League final in Istanbul," Inter director Gabriele Oriali told Corriere dello Sport

Rafa Benitez leaving Liverpool

Rafael Benitez
Rafael Benitez has left Liverpool by mutual consent after six years as manager.

The club have agreed a compensation package with the 50-year-old after a turbulent 2009-10 season.

Liverpool, having begun the campaign among the title favourites, finished a disappointing seventh in the Barclays Premier League and were eliminated from the Champions League at the group stage.

The Premier League result represented an alarming slide for the club after a runners-up finish the previous season.

Benitez, who memorably led the Reds to Champions League glory in 2005, told the club's official website, www.liverpoolfc.tv: "It is very sad for me to announce that I will no longer be manager of Liverpool FC.

"I would like to thank all of the staff and players for their efforts.

"I'll always keep in my heart the good times I've had here, the strong and loyal support of the fans in the tough times and the love from Liverpool.

"I have no words to thank you enough for all these years and I am very proud to say that I was your manager.

"Thank you so much once more and always remember: you'll never walk alone."

Benitez succeeded Gerard Houllier in 2004 and earned a place in Anfield legend with European success in his first season.

He followed that with FA Cup victory in 2006 and another Champions League final appearance 12 months after that, but the Premier League title remained elusive.

The past year has been particularly chastening and he failed to deliver on his "guarantee" of a top-four finish.

That has left the club without Champions League football next season and with club debts of £351million, the board are anxious to give the team fresh impetus.

Chairman Martin Broughton said: "Rafa will forever be part of Liverpool folklore after bringing home the Champions League following the epic final in Istanbul but after a disappointing season both parties felt a fresh start would be best for all concerned."

Liverpool will now begin the search for a successor but say no timescale has been put on an appointment.

Former Reds boss Kenny Dalglish, now an academy ambassador at the club, will assist managing director Christian Purslow to identify candidates.

With owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett looking to sell Liverpool, Dalglish himself has been suggested as a possible cheap, short-term option.

However, the likes of Roy Hodgson, Martin O'Neill and Guus Hiddink have already been heavily touted.

Reports the end of Benitez's reign was imminent began to appear last night but it was thought the financial situation could prove a sticking point.

Benitez signed a five-year contract in March 2009 and it was understood immediate termination could cost the club £16million.

That a compromise has been reached quickly, however, will now allow Benitez to seek immediate re-employment elsewhere.

The former Valencia boss, linked with Real Madrid and Juventus in recent months, is now being tipped as a potential successor to Jose Mourinho at European champions Inter Milan.

1994: Leads Real Madrid's B team to seventh in Spain's Second Division and ends the season as assistant to first-team coach Vicente del Bosque.

1995: Appointed coach of Valladolid but sacked after 23 games with the team bottom of the Primera Liga.

1996: Takes over at Osasuna in Second Division, but lasts just nine games after recording one win.

May - Benitez's side reach the Champions League final for the second time in three seasons but lose to AC Milan in Athens.

2009: March 18 - Benitez signs a new contract after months of uncertainty, keeping him at Anfield until 2014. Liverpool finish second to Manchester United in the Premier League.

November - Finds his position under intense scrutiny after a run of six defeats in seven games in all competitions, the only win coming over United at Anfield, while they also crash out of the Champions League at the group stage.

Lucio thinks England have a good chance

Lucio
Brazil captain Lucio has claimed there are no clear favourites to win the World Cup, but conceded England will be strong contenders to win the trophy.

The Inter Milan centre-back will be looking to cap an outstanding season after winning the Serie A title, Coppa Italia and the Champions League under the guidance of Jose Mourinho, who moved to Real Madrid on Monday.

Lucio has been a colossus at the back in his first season at the San Siro, winning rave reviews for his partnership with Argentine defender Walter Samuel and linking him with a possible continuation of his time under Mourinho with a move to the Bernabeu.

The 32-year-old enters his third finals already with a medal to his name after winning the 2002 tournament and was part of the team that beat England 2-1 in the quarter-finals of the tournament.

However, despite being among the frontrunners to bring the trophy home, he dismissed the prospect of his team heading into the tournament as the outstanding candidate.

"Brazil have done a very good job of preparation," he said.

"We won the Americas Cup, Confederations Cup and we finished in first place in the South American qualifiers for the World Cup. But this does not mean we are favourites.

"Actually, I don't see any favourites. There are many strong teams like Spain, Argentina, England, Italy, many others and also Brazil."

Brazil are in arguably the toughest group of the tournament alongside Portugal and Ivory Coast, as well as North Korea, with Lucio set to match up against Chelsea striker Didier Drogba for the Ivorians, who he got the better of in the Champions League for the Nerazzurri.

"He is such a great player," Lucio said of Drogba.

"In England, the style and the quality of his Chelsea team-mates are very helpful. For Ivory Coast he must play differently."
