Atlanta seek flying start

Atalanta coach Angelo Gregucci has warned Sunday's opponents Lazio his side are ready to hit the ground running in their opening Serie A clash.

The Bergamaschi enjoyed a decent campaign last season, ending the season in 11th place, and will be keen to emulate that achievement this term under the guidance of Gregucci.

Gregucci replaced Luigi Del Neri at the helm of the Bergamo-based outfit in June.

"The team is in good shape and we know we can hold our own against anyone," the new boss said.

"The first week is as important as all the rest. We must always maintain the same level of attention.

"The certainties of this Atalanta team are the same as the team had last season. They took to the field with the aim of winning and so will we.

"We have enjoyed a decent pre-season campaign. Now the important thing is to get off on the right foot. The team is ready and we are counting on starting well."

Gregucci will be looking for a more successful stint in his second Serie A coaching job after a disappointing spell at the helm of Lecce five years ago.

He was sacked by Lecce just five weeks into the 2005/06 campaign.

"There is a lot of enthusiasm in Bergamo," he said. "I'd rather join the wave of enthusiasm than try to stop it.

"But words mean nothing if you dont follow them with actions.

"I believe we have a solid group and I want my team to be a difficult side to beat and to play good football.

"My wish is that one day people will look at my team and say this is Greguccis side.

"That would be a great compliment for me as coach."

Turning his attention to tomorrow's game, Gregucci added, "Whoever is in form will play. There is time until the morning of the match to decide on the team."

Atalanta fans have reason to be optimistic with the arrival of striker Robert Acquafresca on loan from Genoa.

Acquafresca came close to joining Inter Milan this summer but the move never materialised.

The 21-year-old has got over that disappointment and is eager to make an impact with the Bergamaschi.

"What happened regarding Inter is water under the bridge," he said. "The transfer market went as it did and I am happy to be at Atalanta.

"Although this is a loan move, I want to make the most of it and help this team do well.

"I hope Ing the Italian Supercup in Beijing with a 2-1 triumph over Serie A champions Inter earlier this month.

And the Biancoceleste received a further boost ahead of the game at the Stadio Olimpico with Thursdays convincing 3-0 triumph over Elfsborg in their Europe League play-off.
