Bayer Leverkusen sinks down Freiburg
Tranquillo Barnetta and Eren Derdiyok struck two goals apiece as Bayer Leverkusen hammered promoted Freiburg 5-0 to move to the top of the Bundesliga standings.
Stefan Kiessling set the visitors on their way with the opener 10 minutes before half-time and Barnetta doubled their advantage two minutes after the interval.
Derdiyok made it three after 69 minutes and then Barnetta's second of the match put Leverkusen further clear seven minutes later, before Derdiyok's second six minutes from time sealed the rout.
Jupp Heynckes' side started the day in sixth place with four points from two games but end it at the summit on goal difference from Schalke, while Freiburg remain with only one point from three games and slip to bottom spot.
Freiburg mustered the first chance of the match after eight minutes, but Mohammadou Idrissou could only fire his left-footed effort over the bar.
Kiessling saw his attempt to break the deadlock at the other end midway through the opening period well saved by Manuel Salz but he was not to be denied for too much longer.
Fed by Simon Rolfes, Kiessling struck a right-footed shot into the top-right corner to leave Salz helpless.
The floodgates opened after the break as the gulf in class became more evident.
Barnetta drove a fierce right-footed shot home from outside the box in the 47th minute, and then Derdiyok whipped a direct free-kick around the wall and into the top-left corner.
Barnetta's second came from a similar distance to his first, this time low into the bottom-right corner to make it 4-0.
Derdiyok then bagged his second, lashing into the bottom-right corner from Rolfes' knock-down to complete a fine away day for Leverkusen.
