Fergie plays it straight on City

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson resisted the temptation to deliver an eve-of-campaign broadside at Manchester City.
Ferguson branded City "a small club with a small mentality" during the summer in response to a poster of Carlos Tevez erected by the Blues on the busy Deansgate shopping area catchlined 'Welcome to Manchester'.
It was a dig at United's roots, which are outside the city boundaries.
Ferguson has now learned the comments have formed part of Hughes' motivating tools ahead of what promises to be an escalation in the rivalry between the two clubs.
The Red Devils are still irritated at what they see as a cheap stunt.
But Ferguson has elected not to fuel the fire any further.
"I was angry about the poster they put up but that is all I am saying about it," he said.
"Sparky could have used a few of my comments I suppose. He was here long enough.
"To be honest I don't know what purpose it serves but I am sure it helped Mark in some way."
Ferguson has already expressed the belief that City will be lucky to break into the top four.
Emmanuel Adebayor's arrival from Arsenal and the promise of a new central defender, which could be Matthew Upson now David Moyes has staked his own reputation on keeping Joleon Lescott at Goodison Park, has done nothing to change Ferguson's mind.
However, he is intrigued at what is going to unfold at Eastlands over the next few months.
"That is where all the interest lies," he admitted.
"Manchester City have taken us off the back pages. I am quite happy about that because sometimes you get fed up reading about yourself.
"They have spent a lot of money and we are all thinking where is it going to go? What is going to happen?
"But the only real thing that matters are results."
