Wolfsburg comeback to earn a point

Defending champions Wolfsburg twice came from behind to earn a 2-2 draw with Freiburg.

Mohamadou Idrissou opened the scoring for Freiburg after 19 minutes and Felix Bastians' own goal levelled matters eight minutes later.

Ivica Banovic restored Freiburg's lead with a 51st-minute penalty before Fabian Johnson equalised eight minutes from time.

Wolfsburg have now not won in their last three home games and collected just two points from their last four games to improve to 23 points and eighth place.

Freiburg have collected two victories and a draw in their last four contests to jump to 17 points and 13th place - five points clear of the relegation zone.

Wolfsburg dominated the early going but Grafite struck the crossbar with a header in the ninth minute among a series of chances for the hosts.

Freiburg made Armin Veh's men pay for their ineffectiveness four minutes later.

Sascha Riether and Makoto Hasebe stumbled over each other in the Wolfsburg defence and Idrissou ran onto the loose ball and slotted to the far left side. Idrissou, however, appeared to be in an offside position.

Wolfsburg continued their push forward but Bastians cleared Zvjezdan Misimovic's shot on the line in the 25th minute.

The hosts were level, however, two minutes later when Bastians headed Hasebe's cross into his own goal.

Wolfsburg once again struck the woodwork as Misimovic's header found only the crossbar six minutes from the break.

The guests once again used their chances, regaining the lead six minutes after intermission.

The referee ruled that Marcel Schafer tripped Daniel Caligiuri in the right side of the area though replays show the defender was not close to the Freiburg player.

Banovic, however, stepped up to the spot and beat Diego Benaglio with a shot into the bottom corner to make it 2-1.

Wolfsburg finally equalised after 82 minutes. Johnson sent a ball into the area and was fed back the ball by Misimovic before chipping over Simon Pouplin.

Pouplin made an amazing save to preserve the away point with four minutes left, somehow stopping Edin Dzeko's shot from three yards out.
