Michael Mancienne set for Wolves switch on loan

Michael Mancienne is set to conclude the double deal that will enable him to push for a place in Fabio Capello’s squad for next summer’s World Cup finals.

The England Under-21 defender is on the verge of signing a new four-year contract with Chelsea before rejoining Wolverhampton Wanderers on a season-long loan.

The dual arrangement offers Mancienne, 21, the belief that Chelsea still rate his long-term potential and the chance to play regularly for Wolves. It was while on loan at Molineux last season that the defender earned a call-up to the England senior squad. Mancienne spent yesterday tying up loose ends over the unusual arrangement.

Lee Cattermole completed his £6 million transfer from Wigan Athletic to Sunderland yesterday. Cattermole, 21, has agreed a four-year deal. Daryl Murphy has left Sunderland for Ipswich Town for £1.5 million. Andy Marshall has joined Aston Villa on a free transfer from Coventry City, who are on the verge of signing Martin Cranie from

Portsmouth.

Decent bets

Hull City are set to sign Stephen Hunt, for £3.5 million, from Reading, and Kamel Ghilas, an Algeria striker, from Celta Vigo. Álvaro Negredo, the Real Madrid striker rated at £15 million, could follow, although Hull face competition from Blackburn Rovers. Wigan are close to signing Antonio Amaya, a defender, and Mohamed Diamé, a midfield player, from Rayo Vallecano.

Long shots

Aston Villa may await the outcome of Manchester City’s quest to sign Joleon Lescott from Everton before they move for Sylvain Distin of Portsmouth. It is thought City will turn to Distin if Lescott is obliged to remain at Goodison Park. Villa may increase their £4 million bid for Stephen Warnock, but will not meet Blackburn’s £7.5 million evaluation.
