Trond Sollied moves on

Heerenveen have parted company with coach Trond Sollied.

The Norwegian took the reins in March 2008, leading the team to victory in the KNVB Cup last season.

But a disappointing start to the new campaign, where they have won just once in five league matches, has prompted Heerenveen to sever ties with Sollied.

A statement on www.sc-heerenveen.nl described the decision as "inevitable". "SC Heerenveen and their coach Trond Sollied have today, during a meeting, decided to end their cooperation with immediate effect," said the statement.

"The board regrets the outcome but considers it inevitable. They blame the breakdown on cultural differences between the club and the coach.

"The club would like to thank Trond Sollied for what he has done here. He is, and will remain, the first coach in Heerenveen's history to win a trophy - in the form of the KNVB Beker."

Jan de Jonge will coach the first team on a temporary basis until a successor is appointed.

David Carney moves to FC Twente

Australia left-back David Carney is ready to relaunch his club career with Dutch outfit FC Twente after signing a two-year deal with the Eredivisie outfit.

The 25-year-old, who is expected to feature for the Socceroos in next year's World Cup finals in South Africa, had fallen out of favour at Sheffield United and spent time on loan with Norwich at the end of last season.

But Steve McClaren has given Carney a chance to play top-flight football again with the Enschede-based club.

"Since the departure of Edson Braafheid to Bayern Munich, we wanted a replacement. With Nicky Kuiper we have a talented player for the future and we also have Jeroen Heubach," McClaren told the club's website.

"We wanted to look at our depth and increase competition for that position on the left. We have seen Carney and also obtained information from Luke Wilkshire and Pim Verbeek, the coach of Australia. Both were very positive about Carney."

Wilkshire spent time at Twente before moving to Dinamo Moscow last year and had no hesitation recommending his countryman.

Carney helped put himself on the radar by scoring a late goal for the Socceroos in the recent match against Republic of Ireland in Limerick.

Ajax late goal shower sinks 10 man Heracles Alemelo

Three goals in the final half-hour saw Ajax sink 10-man Heracles Almelo and return to within two points of Eredivisie pace-setters AZ Alkmaar.

Toby Alderweireld opened the scoring midway through the second half, shortly before the hosts were reduced to 10 men by the dismissal of Kwame Quansah.

Strikes in the final five minutes from Dario Cvitanich and Ismail Aissati then secured the points for Martin Jol's visitors.

Alderweireld's 20-yard shot in the 10th minute forced Heracles goalkeeper Martin Pieckenhagen into the first save of the match.

Heracles' first chance of note fell just before the half-hour mark to Bas Dost, whose effort was kept out by Maarten Stekelenburg.

Aissati was unlucky not to break the deadlock a minute before the interval, with Pieckenhagen equal to his 16-yard attempt.

The Amsterdam outfit continued to control the tempo of the match after the break, forcing the hosts to spend the bulk of their time defending.

Cvitanich's shot just after the hour looked destined to nestle in the net but Willie Overtoom cleared off the line.

The breakthrough finally came in the 68th minute. Luis Suarez's right-wing cross found the head of Alderweireld, who powered into the top-right corner.

Quansah was given his marching orders for a second bookable offence barely a minute later as Heracles' afternoon went from bad to worse.

And there was more misery to come as Ajax made the result more emphatic with two late goals.

Uruguay forward Suarez crossed for Cvitanich to nod high into Pieckenhagen's net in the 86th minute, and then Aissati fired a fine right-footed shot home to seal the victory two minutes later.

AZ Alkmaar continue their good run

Reigning Eredivisie champions AZ Alkmaar climbed to the top of the table with a 2-1 victory over Willem II.

Australian Brett Holman put them in front in the seventh minute and after Sergio Zijler levelled for the Tilburg side in the 23rd minute, AZ restored their lead seconds later through Hector Moreno to make it four wins from five games so far.

AZ needed just a point to climb above Feyenoord and FC Twente - who play each other on Sunday - in order to go top and they got the perfect start when Holman drilled in a left-foot shot from the edge of the box which Willem II goalkeeper Maikel Aerts could only stand and watch.

Willem II almost equalised two minutes later as Said Boutahar hit the crossbar, the ball rebounding into play and AZ were able to scramble it clear.

Boutahar was then involved in Willem II's equaliser as his corner from the right was headed home by Zijler into the bottom right-hand corner of the goal.

But parity was short-lived for the visitors as Ronald Koeman's team hit back within a minute as Moreno got the ball in the left channel and drilled a 20-yard shot into Aerts' top left-hand corner.

It took until almost 20 minutes from time for either side to fashion another decent chance as the AZ goalscorers linked up, with Holman laying on an opportunity for Moreno who fired wide.

Mounir El Hamdaoui, last season's Eredivisie top scorer with 23 goals, went close to finishing the game off but pulled a shot just wide with two minutes to go after going through on goal against Aerts.

Bordeaux held to a stalemate with Marseille

Bordeaux regained top spot in Ligue 1 - but a goalless draw at unbeaten Marseille means the league's final 100 per cent record has gone.

The visitors had a goal ruled out in the last minute when Jussie scored from Yoann Gourcuff's corner - but Mickael Ciani was penalised for fouling Taye Taiwo.

The hosts had the game's first chance, when Bordeaux goalkeeper Cedric Carasso denied Stephane M'Bia, after Benoit Cheyrou's free-kick had been headed on to him by Mamadou Niang.

The visitors hit back in the 17th minute when Gourcuff's free-kick was headed goalwards by Alou Diarra but goalkeeper Steve Mandanda blocked the attempt.

On the half hour Mathieu Chalme crossed for Marouane Chamakh, whose header was saved on the line by Mandanda.

Two minutes later Brandao released Cheyrou for a superb shot which brushed the Bordeaux post - and three minutes afterwards Brandao struck the post with a powerful left-foot shot.

A minute before the break Carasso parried Niang's header from Cheyrou's free-kick.

Les Girondins had the first chance of the second half, Wendel's 52nd-minute free-kick from 20 yards saved comfortably by Mandanda - and nine minutes later the goalkeeper again had to deal with a tricky effort from the Brazilian which bounced just in front of him.

Marseille came close in the 63rd minute when Cheyrou's well-struck shot hit the woodwork - before play switched to the other end when Mandanda had to scramble to his left to keep out a Gourcuff header.

The home side threatened again two minutes from the end, when Carasso kept out efforts from Hatem Ben Arfa and Cheyrou.

However, in the 90th minute the visitors appeared to have won all three points when Jussie headed in Gourcuff's corner - but the effort was ruled out for an infringement.

Rafael van der Vaart staying at Bernabeu

Dutch midfielder Rafael van der Vaart, linked with a move to Tottenham, has been told he still has a future at Real Madrid.

The Spanish giants needed to cut their squad after their lavish summer spending spree, which brought in the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka and Xabi Alonso.

Van der Vaart was told he could leave the club and not only had to train away from the first-team squad but was not even given a squad number for this season.

But the departure of fellow Dutchmen Arjen Robben and Wesley Sneijder last week for Bayern Munich and Inter Milan, respectively, has handed Van der Vaart a reprieve.

The 26-year-old and his lawyer, Robert Geerlings, recently met with Real coach Manuel Pellegrini, technical director Jorge Valdano and general director Jose Angel Sanchez.

And having already turned down a move to Turkish champions Besiktas this summer, Geerlings admitted it was unexpected to hear Van der Vaart was still wanted at the Bernabeu.

"At the meeting Rafael was urgently requested to stay at Real," he told weekly football magazine Voetbal International.

"The squad has been decreased to 25 players and that made them decide that Rafael doesn't have to leave anymore.

"For us, it was very surprising, and Rafael has decided to fight for his place in Madrid."

Geerlings also claimed that two English clubs made offers for Van der Vaart but he now insists: "It's official, Rafael will stay at Real Madrid."

Van der Vaart made 32 league appearances for Real last season after a summer move from Hamburg, but only 15 were starts.

Barca completes Dmytro Chygrynskiy move

Dmytro Chygrynskiy has completed his 25million euro move from Shakhtar Donetsk to Barcelona.

The Ukraine international successfully underwent his medical with the treble winners on Monday morning before putting pen to paper on a five-year contract this lunchtime.

The 22-year-old defender, who has a buy-out clause of 100million euros in his contract, will be presented by Barca on Monday afternoon.

Chygrynskiy becomes Barca's fourth signing of the summer, following Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Maxwell and Keirrison, who has been loaned out to Benfica for this season.

Chygrynskiy's final game for Shakhtar came against Barca in Friday's European Super Cup in Monaco, which the Catalan giants won to pick up their fifth trophy of the year after the Primera Division, Copa del Rey, Champions League and Spanish Super Cup.

Johnny Heitinga would be great in the team - S.Pienaar

Steven Pienaar reckons Johnny Heitinga would be a "great" deadline-busting signing for Everton.

Toffees boss David Moyes confirmed on Sunday the club have agreed a fee with Atletico Madrid for defender Heitinga.

Everton have offered £5million for the Dutchman, though Moyes admits there is still work to be done on personal terms before the deal is finalised.

Pienaar, though, is hoping Heitinga signs before the transfer window shuts as Moyes looks to bolster his squad.

He told the Liverpool Echo: "We hope a few more faces will come in to boost our confidence and it will make us more alert because we will all be fighting for places.

"I hope Johnny is one of them. I know him really well - he's a good defender, a good professional and his record shows that as he's played for Ajax, Atletico and Holland.

"He'd be a great signing for us. He can play in a few positions - right-back, centre-back or just in front of the defence. He's a quality player."

Santander lands Henrique and Xisco

Racing Santander are set to add two new faces to their squad after agreeing one-year loan deals for Barcelona defender Henrique and Newcastle striker Xisco.

Brazilian Henrique, 21, joined Barca 12 months ago from Palmeiras before spending last season on loan at Bayer Leverkusen - while 23-year-old Spaniard Xisco moved to Newcastle from Deportivo La Coruna last September.

Racing confirmed on their website that they had reached agreements with both Barca and Newcastle to take the two players on loan until June 30, 2010 - adding that the pair will be added to the Cantabrian club's squad once they pass their medicals.

Racing, under new coach Juan Carlos Mandia, started their Primera Division campaign with a 4-1 home defeat by Getafe on Sunday.

M.Donati switches to Bari

Massimo Donati has left Celtic and signed for Serie A side Bari.

The midfielder has returned to Italy after two years with the Glasgow giants.

He had spoken publicly of his desire to quit Celtic last season following a frustrating spell under Gordon Strachan.

But, despite being more involved in the first team since the arrival of Tony Mowbray this summer, the 28-year-old says his decision to return home was for family reasons.

"I asked Celtic for the chance to return to Italy and I am very grateful for granting me that wish," Donati told the club's official website.

"The new manager at Celtic trusted me and respected me but my desire to return to Italy was too strong.

"I'll miss playing in Scotland. The league is more physical and the Italian league is obviously more technical.

"But what I will miss most of all is the fantastic supporters and the atmosphere they create at games. We can learn a lot from them in Italy."

Donati joined Celtic in June 2007 from AC Milan and made 54 appearances for the Hoops, scoring four goals during his time in the east end of Glasgow.

Andrea Dossena set to stay put

Andrea Dossena is likely to stay put at Liverpool, according to the player's agent.

The Italian full-back has been linked with a move back to Serie A this summer, with Napoli and Juventus reportedly showing an interest.

With the Serie A transfer market closing on Monday, Dossena's agent Roberto La Florio believes the chances of the player returning to Italy are slim.

"I am about to arrive in Milan," said La Florio to calciomercato.it. "I know nothing regarding those rumours (Juve and Napoli).

"I have read those stories myself it's only rumours.

"I don't think he will return to Italy, it's difficult for an agreement to be reached now. I really think it's too late."

Dossena is said to be keen on a return to Serie A despite only moving to Anfield last season from Udinese.

It would be a miracle - Fabio Grosso's Agent

Fabio Grosso's agent believes it will take a "miracle" for the defender to join Juventus before the European transfer window closes on Monday night.

Grosso has been linked with a move to the Turin giants over the summer, but with Juve failing to step up their bid to sign the Lyon left-back, the 31-year-old is likely to stay put.

"Juve have made an offer which Lyon considered to be low," said Grosso's agent, Giuseppe Bozzo.

"Grosso has stated his intention to return to Italy but it depends on Lyon.

"I am not optimistic because you are not talking about an ordinary player. We are talking about a world champion that Lyon would only transfer if an important offer arrived.

"I believe Juve have made a reasonable offer. There is still time but a miracle is needed seeing as the transfer market ends today."

Grosso joined Lyon from Inter Milan in the summer of 2007, and is under contract with the French side for a further two seasons.

Chelsea captain John Terry has signed a new five-year contract that will keep him at Stamford Bridge until 2014.

Chelsea hope the new deal, reported to be worth £150,000 per week, will see Terry finish his career in west London.

A club statement read: "Chelsea are delighted to confirm that John Terry has signed a new five-year contract that keeps him at the club until the end of the 2013-14 season.

"This reaffirms both John's and Chelsea's long-stated desire for him to be at Stamford Bridge for the rest of his playing career."

Sunderland closing in on Michael Turner

Sunderland boss Steve Bruce hopes to push through a move for Hull defender Michael Turner.

Press Association Sport understands the Black Cats have been given permission to speak to the 25-year-old after tabling an offer which could eventually rise to around £12million.

Turner has been chased by several clubs this summer, but none had previously come up with the necessary cash to tempt them to sell.

However, Tigers boss Phil Brown admitted after Saturday's 1-1 Barclays Premier League draw at Wolves that the offers currently on the table were "getting towards a ridiculous valuation for a player who cost us £300,000".

But if Turner does head for the Stadium of Light, there is no chance of striker Fraizer Campbell moving in the opposite direction.

The 21-year-old former Manchester United frontman was a target for Hull before he joined Sunderland in a £3.5million deal rising to £6million in July.

There had been suggestions that Brown would ask for Campbell as part of any deal for Turner, but although he is yet to start a league game for his new club, he has already made an impression on Wearside and will not be allowed to leave.

Bruce has worked hard to recruit defensive targets this summer, landing Paraguay international Paulo da Silva and loan signing John Mensah to date.

However, Paul McShane joined Hull for an undisclosed fee on Sunday, while Danny Collins, having held talks with Stoke, is also being chased by Wolves boss Mick McCarthy, the man who took him to Sunderland from Chester for just £140,000 in October 2004.

With Nyron Nosworthy also attracting interest as the transfer window heads towards Monday's 5pm deadline, the manager is determined to bolster his resources at the back further, with Wigan's Maynor Figueroa also thought to be on his list.

Meanwhile, Sunderland are still awaiting developments on Ipswich boss Roy Keane's swoop for midfield duo Grant Leadbitter and Carlos Edwards.

The clubs have agreed fees, but the transfer is being held up by personal terms.

Violas showing interest in Savio

Fiorentina are negotiating with West Ham and could be set for a swap deal that would see Portuguese defender Manuel Da Costa move to the Premier League in exchange for striker Savio.

Da Costa is thought to be a target of the London outfit and the Viola are prepared to let him go in exchange for Savio, who has struggled to make an impact in England since joining West Ham from Brescia in January.

Fiorentina sporting director Pantaleo Corvino confirmed the talks but said the deal has yet to be completed.

He said: "Da Costa is not yet of West Ham.

"They asked for him and we have considered adding Savio in the negotiations, which could be seen as an investment for Fiorentina."

Arsene Wenger fury over Manchester United tactics

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has accused Manchester United of adopting "anti-football" tactics after a fiery meeting between the Barclays Premier League title hopefuls.

United were 2-1 winners over the Gunners on Saturday, coming from behind after Andrey Arshavin had given the visitors the lead.

Arsenal were arguably the better team but were responsible for their own downfall when Manuel Almunia tripped Wayne Rooney to concede a penalty before Abou Diaby inexplicably headed into his own net.

Wenger was then sent to the stands for kicking a water bottle after Robin van Persie's late strike was disallowed for offside.

That capped a week of perceived injustice for Wenger after Eduardo was charged by UEFA over his alleged dive to win a penalty in the Champions League win over Celtic.

The Frenchman, though, compared Eduardo's behaviour favourably with the tough tackling of United at Old Trafford.

"I have seen a player who plays on the pitch only to make fouls," he said. "For me, this is a point that is more urgent than diving.

"The players who are never punished, who get out of the game without a yellow card. I think it is more anti-football than a player who did what Eduardo did.

"Look at how many deliberate fouls some players get away with. That's a bigger problem because it cuts the flow of the game. And people pay to see football, not free-kicks."

Wenger, meanwhile, is set to receive an apology on Monday from the Premier Game Match Officials Board for his sending-off, which League Managers' Association chief executive Richard Bevan described as "completely out of context".

Robinho not joining Barca - Pep Guardiola

Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola has ruled out the possibility of Robinho joining the treble winners before the end of the transfer window, admitting his side are unlikely to make any more signings this summer.

Barca had been linked with a big-money swoop for Brazil forward, who played for the Catalan giants' arch rivals Real Madrid before moving to Manchester City on transfer deadline day 12 months ago for a British record £32.5million.

However, Guardiola has poured cold water on the chance of Robinho moving to the Nou Camp, and also on the likelihood of any new player being brought into the squad save from Shakhtar Donetsk defender Dmytro Chygrynskiy.

"Something extraordinary will have to happen for someone to come in," Guardiola was quoted as saying by El Mundo Deportivo.

"Robinho will not come. He was the star signing of City last year and it would make no sense that they'd let him go now."

Guardiola did admit, though, that he felt Barca's squad was a little thin having only brought in Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Maxwell and Chygrynskiy this summer. He would have liked a midfielder, but nevertheless believes the youngsters coming through can fill any gaps.

"The prices (being asked for players) were exorbitant. I have a lot of faith that the young players can help maintain the balance of the team," he added.

With regards Ukraine defender Chygrynskiy, who is currently undergoing his medical with Barca as he puts the finishing touches on what is reportedly a 25million euro move from Shakhtar Donetsk, Guardiola said: "We have made a good signing.

"We've asked a lot about and and we've seen him a lot, and I think that he can help us."

A Preview of Eredivisie action

Roy Makaay's last-gasp penalty preserved Feyenoord's unbeaten start to the Eredivisie campaign and earned them a 1-1 with FC Twente top spot.

Substitute Nicky Kuiper struck what looked to be the decisive goal 16 minutes from time at De Kuip to seemingly set Steve McClaren's visitors on course for the victory that would have put them a point clear of champions AZ Alkmaar.

But the hosts were offered the chance to nick a draw with the award of a 90th-minute spot-kick and Makaay made no mistake.

Danny Koevermans scored twice in 14 second-half minutes to give PSV Eindhoven a 2-0 victory at FC Groningen.

After an evenly-contested opening period, Koevermans proved the difference between the two sides to leave Groningen firmly in the relegation places and left PSV in third place, above Twente on goal difference.

Koevermans headed in the first with a superb header from 12 yards and made sure of all three points 10 minutes from time with Balazs Dzsudzsak again providing an assist. His cross from the left found Koevermans in the area and he fired a right-foot shot beyond Groningen goalkeeper Luciano da Silva from 10 yards.

Three goals in the final half-hour saw Ajax sink 10-man Heracles 3-0 and return to within two points of AZ.

NAC Breda bounced back from a Europa League hammering on Thursday to claim their third win in five Eredivisie games, 2-0 against Heerenveen.

Robert Maaskant's side were thrashed 6-1 by Villarreal in the second leg of their play-off clash, but made some amends today as second-half goals from Kees Kwakman and Matthew Amoah helped them continue their good start to the season.

It was a bad end to a positive week for Heerenveen, who did take their place in the Europa League group phase with an away-goals victory over PAOK Salonika.

Champions AZ Alkmaar climbed to the top with a 2-1 victory over Willem II on Saturday night.

Australian Brett Holman put Ronald Koeman's side in front in the seventh minute and Hector Moreno bagged a second just moments after Sergio Zijler had levelled to secure a fourth win in five games for AZ.

FC Utrecht maintained their unbeaten start to the season and moved up to fourth with a home 2-0 win against Sparta Rotterdam.

Second-half goals from Jacob Lensky and Gregoor van Dijk ensured a third win in four games for Utrecht.

VVV-Venlo remain without a win in the Eredivisie this season after recording their fifth successive draw at NEC Nijmegen.

Sandro Calabro fired the newly-promoted side in front after half an hour, but Ramon Zomer levelled matters for NEC in the second half and the match ended 1-1.

Vitesse Arnhem edged a thrilling match at Roda JC 4-3 on Friday night to record their first win of the new season.

Vitesse were quick off the mark with a goal in the first minute from Lasse Nilsson but had to wait for their other scorers - Nicky Hofs three minutes before the break, substitute Sinan Kaloglu 14 minutes from time and Santi Kolk with the winner seconds before the final whistle.

Roda did not go quietly on their home patch thanks to a 27th-minute equaliser from Mads Junker, Frank Van der Struijk's own goal which made it all square again early in the second half and an Anouar Hadouir effort to put his team 3-2 in front on the hour.

RKC Waalwijk slumped to their fifth straight defeat - 2-0 at home to ADO Den Haag - as their nightmare start to the season continued.

Bogdan Milic and Wesley Verhoek scored either side of half-time to earn ADO their second away victory of the campaign.

Paris St Germain continues to rule the Ligue 1

Paris St Germain continued their good start to the new Ligue 1 season, with a convincing 3-0 success over Lille earning them a share of top spot.

Jeremy Clement gave PSG the advantage, with Peguy Luyindula and Christophe Jallet netting inside the last 13 minutes to make sure of a second success at the Parc des Princes.

Lyon claimed top spot in Ligue 1 - for 24 hours at least - courtesy of a 3-1 victory over Nancy at the Stade Gerland on Saturday night.

Bafetimbi Gomis and Lisandro Lopez put Les Gones in the ascendancy with goals either side of the interval and Michel Bastos made things safe after Youssouf Hadji had briefly given the visitors hope.

Claude Puel's side moved one point clear of champions Bordeaux, who visit the Stade Velodrome to take on Marseille on Sunday night.

Crowd disturbances compounded a miserable night for 10-man Nice, as newly-promoted Montpellier continued their bright start to the season by romping to a 3-0 away win to move up to third.

Just before the hour mark, and with the hosts trailing 2-0 through goals from Geoffrey Dernis and Victor Montano, the referee took the players off the pitch as missiles rained down.

Police and stewards regained control, and after a delay of 20 minutes play resumed - but the pattern was the same as little went right for the hosts.

Lilian Compan completed the scoring and Onyekachi Apam was given his marching orders for a second bookable offence.

A late goal from Rennes forward Asamoah Gyan denied newly-promoted Lens a victory as both sides finished with 10 men in a 2-2 draw at the Stade Felix Bollaert.

Ismael Bangoura gave Rennes the early lead but Yohann Demont's penalty levelled things up as the sides went in level at half-time.

Lens were the first to have a man sent off as Marco Ramos received a second yellow card before Yann M'Vila's dismissal levelled things up.

Issam Jemaa's header restored Lens' lead but Gyan ensured the game ended with both sides claiming a point.

Vaclav Sverkos' first-half penalty secured Sochaux their second league victory of the season this evening and inflict a second defeat on Monaco.

Marama Vahirua's second-half free-kick was enough to hand Lorient their first home win of the season against Le Mans.

St Etienne also secured their first three-point haul with a 1-0 win over Grenoble thanks to Christophe Landrin's first-half goal.

Auxerre claimed their first point of the term but their wastefulness cost them the chance to earn more than a goalless draw at promoted Boulogne-sur-Mer.

Hamburg top of the Bundesliga

Paolo Guerrero scored twice to see off Cologne and send Hamburg to the top of the Bundesliga.

The Peru striker opened the scoring after 19 minutes and added a second for Bruno Labbadia's men midway through the second half.

Substitute Adil Chihi gave the visitors hope within two minutes of his introduction but Piotr Trochowski settled the nerves of the home fans with a penalty four minutes from time.

With Labbadia recalling the first-team regulars who were rested for their midweek Europa League win over Guingamp, Hamburg looked lively from the outset.

After spells of controlled possession, Hamburg's probing resulted in the opening goal when David Jarolim picked out Guerrero and the former Bayern Munich striker made no mistake from 12 yards.

Cologne threatened an equaliser through Maniche but his header from a Pierre Wome cross drifted over the bar.

It was Hamburg who ended the first half on top, though, Trochowski's 25-yard drive well saved by Cologne keeper Faryd Mondragon.

Hamburg dominated the second half with Mladen Petric testing Mondragon within four minutes of the restart as did Dennis Aogo shortly afterwards.

The second goal finally came after 66 minutes when another clinical finish from Guerrero gave Mondragon no chance.

Hamburg appeared to be cruising but Cologne grabbed a lifeline out of the blue with Chihi cracking in a 25-yard drive.

The visitors rarely threatened an equaliser, however, and a foul from Mondragon on Hamburg midfielder Ze Roberto resulted in a spot-kick which Trochowski slotted away to send Hamburg top, ahead of Bayer Leverkusen on goals scored.

Bayer Leverkusen bounce back with a win

Manuel Friedrich scored at both ends in the first half as Bayer Leverkusen came from behind to secure all three points against Bochum and move to the top of the Bundesliga.

Friedrich scored an own goal after 32 minutes before netting the equaliser four minutes before half-time.

Stefan Kiessling completed the recovery with the winner just over 20 minutes before the end as Leverkusen finally made their domination count.

Bochum opened the scoring when Joel Epalle saw his shot deflected by Friedrich past home goalkeeper Rene Adler.

But it did not take long for the equaliser to come. Bochum conceded a free-kick, for which Diego Klimowiz was booked, and Michael Kadlec sent a long ball forward.

Friedrich was in the right place this time as his header went just under the bar to draw the sides level.

The home side enjoyed the majority of the pressure in the first half but were only able to score once as they either shot wide or found Bochum goalkeeper Philipp Heerwagen on fine form.

Kiessling made Leverkusen's second-half domination count when he netted what turned out to be the winner after 68 minutes.

Leverkusen's Toni Kross made space down the right and surged into the Bochum area before crossing for Kiessling.

A right foot shot found the goal for Kiessling's fourth of the season.

The home side continued to press for a third goal to make the points safe but were denied by some determined defending by Bochum.

Bremen edge 5-goal thriller

Werder Bremen edged a five-goal thriller with Hertha Berlin 3-2 as all the goals came in just over half an hour in the second period.

There was little to write home about in the first half with just one noteworthy chance for each side.

Hertha's Max Nicu saw his powerful shot saved by Bremen goalkeeper Tim Wiese after 20 minutes, while at the other end Mesut Ozil hit the post when left with just keeper Jaroslav Drobny to beat.

Matters improved markedly in the second half and Bremen took the lead 12 minutes after the interval.

Ozil this time made no mistake when a 30-metre run left him alone with the goalkeeper again, keeping his cool to beat Drobny from close range.

Wiese then suffered an injury on the hour mark and had to be replaced by Christian Vander, but the visitors doubled their lead on 74 minutes.

Drobny failed to cling onto a shot from Torsten Frings and Tim Borowski was on hand to collect the rebound and fire home from six yards.

Three minutes later Hertha got back into the game when Lukasz Piszczek fired home a free-kick from 20 yards.

But Bremen effectively secured all three points soon after when Naldo headed home their third goal from a corner.

There was still time for Patrik Ebert to reduce the deficit with a brilliant long-range effort, but Hertha were unable to find an equaliser in injury time as Bremen held on for the win.

Dream day for Arjen Robben

Arjen Robben made a dream debut for Bayern Munich as he scored twice in their 3-0 win over Bundesliga champions Wolfsburg.

Bayern coach Louis van Gaal initially left the new arrival from Real Madrid on the substitutes' bench, but with his side only leading 1-0 at half-time thanks to a strike from Mario Gomez he decided to introduce his compatriot after the interval.

Robben combined well with Franck Ribery to net a brace and seal Bayern's first win of the season to take them up to seventh in the table and erase memories of the club's worst start to a league season in 43 years.

Van Gaal also left Miroslav Klose out of his starting line-up, preferring instead Ivica Olic alongside Gomez and Thomas Muller in a three-man attack.

In goal, Hans-Jorg Butt was given his first start of the season at the expense of Michael Rensing.

Wolfsburg coach Armin Veh left Karim Ziani out of his starting XI following a training ground clash with Edin Dzeko earlier this week. Ashkan Dejagah started while Dzeko and Grafite both kept their places in attack.

Grafite had the first chance of the game in the sixth minute, giving Butt some early work to do which the Bayern goalkeeper did successfully.

The Wolves were roaring on the back of their 4-2 defeat to Hamburg last weekend and former Bayern midfielder Zvjezdan Misimovic was causing numerous problems to the Bayern defence.

But the home time reacted well and went ahead thanks to Gomez in the 27th minute.

Wolfsburg failed to properly clear a corner and Hamit Altintop's long-range shot was only parried by Diego Benaglio to the Bayern goal poacher, who welcomed the invitation for his second goal of the season.

Van Gaal introduced Robben for his debut at the start of the second half and Bayern remained the superior team, although Wolfsburg came close to an equaliser on the hour mark when Dzeko's diving header was pushed over the crossbar by Butt.

Ribery was then introduced and, five minutes later, he set up Robben for his first Bayern goal.

Ribery sent Robben on his way into the left-hand side of the penalty area and the Dutchman's shot took a slight deflection off Andrea Barzagli on its way past Benaglio into the back of the net.

Wolfsburg tried to fight back when Dzeko hit the post in the 72nd minute.

Moments later, Philipp Lahm had to make a goalline clearance to prevent Grafite from scoring.

But Robben settled Bayern's nerves with his second goal on his debut with Ribery again involved as the Bavarians launched a quick counter-attack which Robben concluded with a low shot underneath Benaglio to seal Bayern's first win of the season in style.

Opening defeat for Espanyol

Espanyol marked their first competitive match since the death of former captain Dani Jarque with defeat, going down to Athletic Bilbao in the opening round of the Primera Division.

Athletic striker Gaizka Toquero scored the only goal of the game 12 minutes from time to hand the Basques a perfect start to the campaign.

It was not the result hoped for by Espanyol, who are still in mourning over the tragic death of Jarque from a heart attack earlier this month.

In truth, Joaquin Caparros' side had something of a head-start on Espanyol in this encounter, given that this match was already their seventh competitive game of the season.

Athletic had already played four Europa League qualifying matches, advancing to the group stages of the competition last week, as well as the two legs of the Spanish Supercup, which they lost to Barcelona.

And that extra edge showed early on as Athletic looked the sharper of the two sides.

The home side almost went ahead after nine minutes, when Fernando Llorente rose majestically and crashed a powerful header towards goal, but Espanyol keeper Carlos Kameni made a fine reflex save to deny the Spain striker.

Eight minutes later, Kameni was the hero again for the visitors, this time moving brilliantly to push away Toquero's close-range header.

Espanyol should have taken the lead after 23 minutes, but the unmarked Joan Verdu wastefully shot wide with only Athletic keeper Gorka Iraizoz to beat.

The midfielder, a summer signing from Deportivo La Coruna, was making his debut in midfield, and should have done much better with that effort.

And Mauricio Pochettino's side squandered another glorious opportunity just before the break, when Ivan Alonso rose above his marker Xabi Castillo, but could not keep his header down and saw the ball sail over the bar.

That was the last meaningful action of an entertaining and evenly-disputed first half.

After the break, both sides struggled to find their rhythm early on.

Gurpegui blasted well over from distance as the two teams were restricted to long-range efforts.

As the game wore on, it looked as if one goal may well win it.

And it fell to Athletic with 12 minutes left, when Toquero beat his marker Javi Chica and despatched a clinical shot past an exposed Kameni to give the home side the lead.

Llorente should have made it two with a minute left, but shot wide with only Kameni to beat and there were nervous moments for Athletic in the closing seconds as the Espanyol keeper moved into the area for a corner.

But Iraizoz claimed the ball to keep his former team-mates at bay and ensure a happy afternoon for Athletic.

For Espanyol, it was a frustrating start to the season which had promised so much when the Catalans thrashed Liverpool 3-0 on the inauguration of their new stadium just a few weeks ago.

There, following the international break, the Catalans will host Real Madrid in what will be another huge tribute to their former captain.

Villareal held to a draw

Villarreal had to settle for a point at Osasuna as the sides cancelled each other out in the first round of the Primera Division in Pamplona.

The Yellow Submarine took the lead through the excellent Santi Cazorla just after the half-hour mark, but Walter Pandiani struck the equaliser six minutes later for Osasuna, who managed to survive a wave of attacks from the visitors late on to seal a hard-earned point.

Villarreal had signalled their intentions on Thursday night, when they thrashed Dutch side NAC Breda at El Madrigal 6-1 with a stunning attacking performance.

And that had been achieved without their big summer signing, Nilmar, who was rested.

The Brazilian returned for this game to partner Giuseppe Rossi up front for Villarreal, who were also starting the season under a new coach after Ernesto Valverde replaced Manuel Pellegrini earlier this summer.

But Osasuna play with great intensity at home and Valverde therefore decided to field three combative men in midfield, with Sebastien Eguren, Cani and Marcos Senna charged with winning the battle in the centre of the park and Cazorla the sole creative outlet behind the front men.

Villarreal almost went ahead through an unlikely source after 23 minutes, when centre-back Diego Godin saw his header cleared off the line.

But eight minutes later, they were ahead as Cazorla lashed a deflected long-range effort past a helpless Ricardo.

And five minutes later, it could have been two, but Nilmar shot straight at Ricardo.

Osasuna then went up the other end and levelled.

Pandiani controlled a long ball with his head and fed Carlos Aranda, who held off his marker and set up the Uruguayan for a clinical low finish which gave Diego Lopez no chance.

It was probably about fair at this stage, but Villarreal were far superior after the break.

Nilmar sent a shot spinning just wide of the target four minutes after the interval and Cazorla was brilliantly denied by the busy Ricardo just after the hour mark as the visitors looked to make their superiority count.

And in an attempt to win the match, Valverde sent on the more creative talents of Robert Pires and Ariel Ibagaza late on.

The visitors were in complete control now and Ricardo did well to deny Pires with 13 minutes left.

The Osasuna goalkeeper was then alert to clear as Nilmar was ready to pounce after 86 minutes.

There was only one likely winner now, but Osasuna were desperate to hang on for a point and defended in numbers late on.

And time was running out fast for the visitors.

Pires could have won it with just two minutes left, but blasted over from close range when he really should have hit the target.

That was the last chance for Villarreal, who will definitely see this as a missed opportunity.

Valverde will be encouraged by his team's performance, nevertheless, and Osasuna will be content to begin with a hard-earned point as well following last season's miserable campaign which almost saw them relegated.

Xerez day of defeat

Xerez's first-ever game in the Primera Division ended in disappointment as they slipped to defeat against Real Mallorca and also had two players sent off.

Sixty-two years after the club was founded, Xerez finally clinched a place in the top flight after winning the Segunda Division title last season, but it was not to be a happy debut for the Andalusian outfit.

The dismissal of Leandro Gioda for a second booking in the 40th minute put Xerez on the back foot and Mallorca took full advantage to take the points thanks to second-half goals from Aritz Aduriz and Tuni.

There was no way back for Xerez after that and Jose Angel Ziganda's side lost a second player to a red card late on when Carlos Calvo was handed his marching orders after also picking up a second yellow.

The defeat was tough on Xerez, who started the match well and continued to create chances even when they were a man down, and despite the defeat they can take encouragement for the coming campaign.

Most of the early attacking was done by the visitors, and Abel Gomez had a great chance to put Xerez ahead in the 12th minute but he could not direct his half-volley on target with only Dudu Aouate to beat.

Gomez then saw another effort loop agonisingly over the bar after Momo's cross from the left had caused problems, before Mallorca created their first chance in the 29th minute, Victor Casadesus firing straight at Renan Brito from seven yards.

That was a decent opening for Mallorca, and Xerez can consider themselves somewhat fortunate not to have fallen a goal behind.

The visitors were not so lucky five minutes before the break though when Argentinian centre-back Gioda picked up the second of two bookings following a challenge near the halfway line.

Inevitably with a man advantage, Mallorca started to feature more strongly as an attacking force in the second half and Aduriz blazed over before Gonzalo Castro was denied by a goal-saving diving block by Renan following a jinking run.

The hosts were not to be denied in the 57th minute though as last season's top scorer Aduriz gave them the lead.

Tuni floated a teasing cross into the area and Aduriz climbed between his marker and goalkeeper to hammer a powerful header into the top corner.

Mallorca almost lost their lead just 60 seconds later, however, as Xerez created a great chance for the unmarked Giancarlo Maldonado, whose left-footed shot was well saved by Aouate.

That proved to be key moment, as a minute later Mallorca were celebrating their second goal, and with it the points were virtually theirs.

Tuni and Aduriz were again involved, with Tuni playing a one-two with the former Athletic Bilbao striker before the left winger's cross-shot took a deflection off a Xerez defender before flying over the stranded Renan and into the net.

Even though the game was slipping away from them, Xerez still pushed forward and they deserved a goal as they went close three times in quick succession, Aouate brilliantly tipping over Victor Sanchez's shot, Alex Bergantinos having a header cleared off the line and Francis Perez volleying wide.

It was not to be for Xerez though, and they suffered another blow late on when Calvo picked up his second yellow for handball.

Roberto Soldado tops the scoresheet

Roberto Soldado made a blistering start to the new Primera Division season with his hat-trick helping Getafe claim a comfortable victory at Racing Santander.

Rafa Lopez was also on target for the visitors, with Medhi Lacen's goal the only bright spot for a Racing side who were torn apart in the first 35 minutes.

New Racing coach Juan Carlos Mandia had already warned his players of the threat posed by Getafe's strikeforce before a ball had been kicked at Estadio El Sardinero.

And alarm bells should have been ringing in the home defence when Daniel Parejo's 12th-minute effort fell just wide of the left post.

Yet Racing still found themselves trailing moments later. Mandia's men failed to deal with Adrian Gonzalez's inswinging corner from the right allowing Rafa to find some space and head home from a few yards out.

Racing's back-line was looking ragged and a corner from Parejo after 19 minutes caused further panic before midfielder Manuel Arana cleared the danger.

But Getafe were proving more than a handful and they doubled their lead after 28 minutes from the boot of Soldado, who nipped into the area before nestling a shot into the bottom left corner.

Soldado was unfortunate not to add another four minutes later, when the former Real Madrid striker saw his curling right-footed strike blocked on the line by home goalkeeper Antonio Tono.

But he got the better of Racing's defence again after 34 minutes and this time it paid dividends, with a low right-footed effort finding the left corner from 10 yards.

It took the home side 38 minutes to register their first shot on goal, but Oscar Ustari was alert to Arana's drive and managed to get his body behind the ball.

However, Racing reduced the arrears two minutes before the interval when Lacen smashed a 25-yard strike into the bottom left corner.

Getafe coach Michel, who helped the club avoid relegation last season, would have been delighted with his team's first-half performance up front.

The visitors continued to get forward in numbers after the restart, and although Tono did well to keep out Parejo's shot from distance, the Racing keeper conceded a fourth goal after 55 minutes.

Again it was Soldado, Getafe's top scorer last season, who found the target with another low drive which flew into the bottom right corner.

That put the result beyond doubt and the match quickly descended into a scrappy affair, with Ustari, Soldado and Jose Manuel Mane all going in the referee's book for the visitors within a 10-minute spell.

The fight had completely gone out of Racing and only Arana seemed interested in trying to salvage something from the match.

But the midfielder saw one shot from distance saved by Ustari, while another 20-yard strike five minutes from time landed wide of the mark.

Real Madrid sneeks through with a narrow win

Cristiano Ronaldo was on the scoresheet as Real Madrid got their Primera Division campaign off to a winning start tonight, but they were given a few scares along the way before seeing off Deportivo La Coruna 3-2 at the Bernabeu.

Manuel Pellegrini selected seven of the club's eight summer arrivals in his starting XI, including superstars Ronaldo, Kaka and Karim Benzema, but it was one of their existing and less heralded players, Lass Diarra, who earned Madrid the spoils.

Diarra fired home a low 25-yard shot on the hour mark to secure victory for Madrid after battling Depor had twice drawn level to cancel out goals by Raul and Ronaldo, the visitors scoring through Riki and Juan Carlos Valeron.

It was not the most convincing of performances by Madrid, who spent more than 250million euros on new talent this summer, but they will settle for the win, especially having lost 2-1 against the same opponents on the opening game of last season.

Usain Bolt, fresh from his record-breaking exploits in the 100m and 200m at the athletics World Championships, was presented to the crowd prior to kick-off, and the Jamaican sprinter would have been impressed at how quickly Madrid flew out of the blocks.

However, the first-minute move that saw Kaka break through on goal before dragging his shot wide of the far post proved to be something of a false down for Madrid, who looked disjointed in the opening stages.

Despite that though, it took the new-look Madrid just 26 minutes to break the deadlock when two of their new boys combined to give old warhorse Raul the simplest of finishes.

Kaka's through-ball put Benzema in behind the Depor defence and, although the Frenchman's low drive was deflected onto the near post by Daniel Aranzubia, the rebound fell kindly to captain Raul to slot into an empty net.

That was just the boost Madrid would have wanted after an uncertain start, and Ronaldo should have made it 2-0 three minutes later when he climbed highest in the box to get on the end of Xabi Alonso's curling free-kick, but the £80million man failed to keep his header down.

Ronaldo really should have made the most of that chance, and his disappointment would have been compounded 60 seconds later when Depor equalised from an almost identical situation.

Juca launched a free-kick into the box and Riki, the former Madrid youth-team player, got in between two defenders to direct a header past Iker Casillas from seven yards.

That was an unexpected setback for Madrid and one that certainly did not fit with the script on what was supposed to be a memorable season opener for the new 'Galacticos'.

However, that goal did serve to spark Madrid into action and they then enjoyed a purple patch that resulted in Ronaldo putting the home side back in front and a host of near-misses.

Ronaldo's goal, like two of his previous three since his summer move from Manchester United, came from the penalty spot after Raul had been sent sprawling by Aranzubia.

The pressure was on Ronaldo, under the spotlight after a fairly low-key pre-season, but the FIFA World Player of the Year showed no signs of nerves as he drilled his spot-kick just inside the post.

Madrid should really have extended their lead before half-time, with Raul denied by Aranzubia following a fine run by Ronaldo, Ezequiel Garay seeing a header cleared off the line and Kaka firing just over from the edge of the box.

And those failures came back to haunt Madrid at the start of the second half as Depor drew level through Valeron just seconds after the interval.

Andres Guardado's cross to the edge of the box found Valeron unmarked and the 34-year-old had all the time in the world to control the ball and drill a low shot past the unmoved Casillas.

Valeron then missed a much easier chance 12 minutes later to put Depor ahead, the former Atletico Madrid player volleying Guardado's cross wide from six yards.

That looked a certain goal, but Madrid survived and within three minutes they were back in front thanks to Diarra, whose low 25-yard shot crept inside the far post.

With so much attacking talent on show, few would have expected holding midfielder Diarra to earn Madrid the points, but that proved to be the case as Depor could find no way back for a third time.

And it was Madrid who looked more likely to add to the scoreline in the final half-hour, with Benzema again seeing a shot deflected onto the woodwork by Aranzubia and Ronaldo being denied by the Depor custodian following a darting run.

Gonzalo Higuain, last season's top scorer who found himself on the bench at the start of the game, also had a chance but he blazed over from close range.

Diego's brace shut doors for Roma

Brazilian striker Diego was on target twice as Juventus beat Roma 3-1 at the Stadio Olimpico.

Juve's top summer signing opened his Serie A account in the 25th minute before Roma's Daniele de Rossi equalised 10 minutes later.

Diego put Juve back in front in the 68th minute and Felipe Melo added a third in injury time as the Turin giants claimed their second win of the new campaign.

The triumph means that Ciro Ferrara has had a dream start in his first full campaign as Juve coach, the club he once played for.

Ferrara took the reins in a caretaker role after Claudio Ranieri was sacked at the end of last season and Juventus made the former Italy defender full-time coach earlier this summer.

Sunday's clash flowed from one end to the other.

Juve had an excellent opportunity to go ahead in the 22nd minute when Tiago met Diego's right-wing cross with a fine header that forced Roma goalkeeper Julio Sergio to make a marvellous save.

There was little Julio Sergio could do to deny Juve taking the lead shortly after however.

Diego, signed from Werder Bremen this summer, fired a right-footed strike from inside the area towards the far post which the goalkeeper could not reach.

But Juve's joy was short-lived as Roma hit back with De Rossi's stinging drive from the distance stunning Juve goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon.

Juve reacted and Amauri twice had the chance to put his team in front.

Diego's cross from the left found his compatriot inside the area and his powerful header forced Julio Sergio to palm over the crossbar.

In the 43rd minute, Amauri was unlucky not to score his first goal of the season as he fired a right-footed strike from inside the area that struck the far post with Julio Sergio already beaten.

Roma were not without their chances.

Team captain Francesco Totti should have given his team the lead on the stroke of half-time.

Jeremy Menez's through-ball left an unmarked Totti with Buffon to beat but his effort towards the near post was saved by the Juve goalkeeper.

Ferrara's side continued to cause the Roma defence problems in the second half.

Julio Sergio was forced to dive to his left to clear Amauri's left-footed strike.

Shortly before the hour mark, Nicolas Burdisso made a crucial tackle with Vincenzo Iaquinta ready to fire inside the area.

Juve were rewarded for their attacking play midway through the second half.

Iaquinta fed Diego inside the area and his powerful strike down the middle went into the back of the net.

Roma coach Luciano Spalletti reacted, bringing Mirko Vucinic on.

The Romans thought they had equalised with 12 minutes remaining when Totti's right-footed strike beat Buffon but the ball rebounded off the far post.

Roma surged forward desperately in search of the equaliser and their hopes proved to no avail as Juve put the game beyond reach with two minutes left to play.

A fast counter-attack from Juve saw the ball fall to Felipe Melo, who with a left-footed strike beat the Roma goalkeeper.

While Juventus have enjoyed a strong start to the campaign, Roma have now lost two in a row.

Lots of work to do for Rossoneri - Leonardo

AC Milan coach Leonardo admitted his side still have a lot of work to do if they are to be regarded as serious Serie A title challengers this season after they were thrashed 4-0 by Inter Milan.

The Rossoneri made a confident start to the game, but collapsed as soon as Thiago Motta gave Inter the lead after 29 minutes and Leonardo admitted he would have to get back to the drawing board on Monday.

"I saw a good Milan who played on the same level as a great Inter for half an hour, but after they went 1-0 up we struggled to deal with the difficult situation," he said.

"We still need to grow."

As if the crushing defeat was not enough, Leonardo also lost Gennaro Gattuso to a red card which rules him out of the Rossoneri's next game at Livorno in a fortnight.

The Milan captain had already asked to be replaced after suffering an ankle injury early in the game and Leonardo admitted he should have been quicker to react.

"Certainly it is my error not to have substituted him earlier," he said.

"But (Clarence) Seedorf was not ready to come on yet and he also had a block of ice on his calf due to a small muscular problem."

Inter coach Jose Mourinho had consolatory words for his counterpart as he refused to make a big deal out of his side's win.

The Portuguese coach enjoyed a fierce rivalry with Leonardo's predecessor Carlo Ancelotti last season, but his side's victory tonight appeared to bring a more sympathetic side out of the former Chelsea and Porto coach.

"He should not lose faith in himself," he told Sky Sport television.

"The world of football is like this. We have to make choices and if you win, you are fantastic, and if you lose, it's a disaster.

"Last week I was really pathetic and today I am fantastic and the same thing will be said to Leonardo that he was fantastic before and is now pathetic."

Nevertheless, Mourinho was quick to accept that his side were the better team.

"After the first goal, the game was over," he said. "My team won easily."

Mourinho handed Wesley Sneijder his debut just days after he arrived from Real Madrid and the Dutchman's performance has given the Inter coach reason to be optimistic about his side's chances of success this season.

He said: "I have said that we have more potential in this squad because we have exactly the players that I have always wanted.

"My team is more balanced now. To beat our Milan rivals and to have four points from two games is very positive and an excellent foundation to work on."

Steven Gerrard comes to the rescue once again

Steven Gerrard provided the answer in actions, not just words, which Rafael Benitez demanded after a traumatic opening to Liverpool's season.

Everything in the Anfield garden may not yet be rosy, but at least the Merseysiders are not having to contemplate the end of their title challenge before the transfer window shuts.

That would have been the nature of the inquest had Bolton inflicted a third league defeat on the Reds in the campaign's first fortnight.

Gary Megson's side, still without a point this term, tried their best and led twice through Kevin Davies and Tamir Cohen as Liverpool failed to handle crosses into the box.

Glen Johnson's second goal of the campaign in the first half kept Liverpool in it, but Bolton were still 2-1 ahead when Sean Davis was sent off after 54 minutes for two bookable offences.

From then on Liverpool battered away, Fernando Torres equalised and then Gerrard lashed home the winner in the dying minutes.

Liverpool boss Benitez had been critical of his senior men and their perceived lack of responsibility ahead of the match, and had even gone to the extent of suggesting Gerrard had played a couple of below-par games.

Such is the influence of Gerrard, such a statement could represent a full-blown crisis.

But whoever writes the 29 year-old's scripts - and there have been plenty of crackers over the years - came up with another and Gerrard responded in the only way he knows.

He was not back to his best by a long way, but cometh the hour, cometh the man, Gerrard putting Liverpool back on track and ending any thoughts that he was distracted by his summer court case or next year's World Cup finals.

Gerrard said: "The manager questioned the whole team after Monday's home defeat by Aston Villa, and rightly so. We were nowhere near good enough and we didn't play close to our standard.

"There has been a lot of soul-searching this week. The manager asked for character, determination and intensity and I think he got the three things he wanted from us all.

"We have had a couple of good meetings this week and we couldn't wait for this game to come around.

"We went behind twice but again we showed what character we have in this team.

"Going behind twice there are times when you think you are not going to get a point, never mind three, but we got our rewards in the end and we could have ended up scoring four or five."

Gerrard added: "We now go away on international duty and when we get back we will have a few new faces back in the squad with the lads who have been out injured, so that will give us a boost.

"We played so well last season and everyone was expecting us to start strongly again and win matches, but we all expected that ourselves.

"To lose two games already was a bit of a shock to us all but it is all about reactions. We know we have got a good team, a team that is capable of fighting for the title and we have got to go and prove that now."

Megson reckoned the dismissal of Davis for a trip on Lucas, changed the course of the game, and he was right.

But his criticism of players who slow down when running to allow defenders to foul them was a pretty lame defence.

The real change, though, was the freedom Gerrard got when Bolton were down to 10 men. Bolton could not afford to have Fabrice Muamba man-marking Gerrard in such circumstances, and the Liverpool skipper ran the show from then on.

Gerrard said: "We got our rewards and deserved to win it. But Bolton are organised and very dangerous at set-pieces and they showed that by going ahead twice.

"I knew Gary (Megson) would have Fabrice marking me, because he did the same thing twice last season. Fabrice is a very fit lad and can get about the pitch and he was my shadow.

"I don't like seeing men get sent off, but it worked in my favour because I could get more space and have more of an impact."

Megson said: "The red card was the turning point, and I have sympathy for Sean over both yellow cards. Yes, you should not kick the ball away from a free-kick, but that was just frustration.

"And when someone is running away from you and slows up, there is contact. We were not cute enough, maybe we should get better ourselves at chucking ourselves all over the field.

"You control the ball, wait for the hit in the back and over you go. The referee is suckered into giving it."

Richard Dunne will be inspirational to the club - S.Petrov

Aston Villa captain Stiliyan Petrov believes Richard Dunne will prove to be a 'big signing' for the club.

Dunne is expected to finalise a move to Villa Park before the close of the transfer window after Martin O'Neill's side agreed a fee with Manchester City.

The centre-half has discussed personal terms with Villa, although reports in Sunday's newspapers suggested the deal was being held up due to contractual issues with City.

Petrov expects the deal to go through and the Bulgarian midfielder believes Dunne can help to fill the void created by Martin Laursen's retirement over the summer.

"The deal for Dunne will be great news for Villa," said Petrov.

"Richard's an international player, he's been in the Premier League for so many years and is one of the game's big players.

"It's going to be a big signing for Villa. It will give us a strong defender at the back and, of course, he's definitely a true leader.

"He's the captain of Ireland, he's been the captain of Manchester City, so you love to see players like that coming to this club.

"Laursen was a big player for us, with his presence and his influence. But he, like Gareth Barry, is now gone and we need to get on without him.

"The arrival of Dunne can help us to do that."

Luka Modric on the sidelines

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Luka Modric faces a spell on the sidelines after fracturing his fibula in the win over Birmingham City.

Modric was hurt following a tangle with Lee Bowyer during the early stages of the second half of Saturday's 2-1 success at White Hart Lane and was replaced by Peter Crouch.

Speaking after the game, Spurs boss Harry Redknapp was hoping that the Croatia international had only suffered damage to his calf.

However, X-rays have now shown the Croatian ace has fractured his right fibula and it could lead to Modric being out of action for months.

A Tottenham statement read: "X-rays have determined that Luka Modric sustained a fracture to his right fibula during Saturday's victory over Birmingham City at White Hart Lane."

Modric told Croatian daily Jutarnji List: "It's like my whole world has crumbled because I will be out for at least six weeks.

"I am terribly sad.

"It wasn't a ferocious tackle, but it hurt awfully and I knew something was wrong the moment it happened.

"The worst feeling is knowing that I will be watching both my club and country from the sidelines for a while."

Three wins in a row for City

Emmanuel Adebayor hit the target for the third Premier League game in a row as Manchester City defeated struggling Portsmouth 1-0 at Fratton Park to make in nine points from nine.

Adebayor struck on the half-hour mark.

Gareth Barry's inswinging corner from the right found the former Arsenal striker, who escaped the attention of Mokoena and planted his header home from close range.

Pompey rarely threatened, managing only one shot on target from David Nugent in the closing stages which Shay Given did well to block.

City only won two away games last season and have matched that total already but it's three successive defeats and just one goal for Pompey.

Everton grabbed their first league points of the season, an injury-time penalty from Leighton Baines giving them a 2-1 win over Wigan.

Some of Wigan's tackling - they picked up six bookings - enraged the Goodison Park faithful but it looked as if Roberto Martinez's men were going to grab a point at least.

They led early in the second period through a Paul Scharner header before Louis Saha grabbed his fourth goal of the season to pull Everton level.

And the home side had to wait until the third minute of injury-time and Emmerson Boyce's foul on Jo for Baines to have the chance to smash home the penalty winner.

Gabriel Agbonlahor helped Aston Villa bounce back from their European exit as they easily defeated Fulham 2-0 to register their first home league win of the campaign.

The England striker's pressure forced Fulham defender John Pantsil to head into his own net for the opening goal after three minutes.

Then Agbonlahor struck the decisive second goal 14 minutes into the second period - his first of the season - to wrap up the points for Martin O'Neill's side.

It was the perfect pick-up for Villa after failing to qualify for the group stages of the Europa League after being beaten on away goals by Rapid Vienna.

Everton seek win in the dying minutes

Everton boss David Moyes has confirmed the club have agreed a fee with Atletico Madrid for defender Johnny Heitinga.

The Toffees have offered £5million for the Dutchman, but Moyes admits there is still work to be done before the deal is finalised.

He said: "We have not as yet agreed personal terms.

"I hope we will be able to do that soon, but we have not as yet concluded that part of the move."

Moyes unveiled two new signings in the 2-1 win over Wigan, with £5million acquisition Sylvain Distin and Russia winger Diniyar Bilyaletdinov both making their debuts.

Wigan led early in the second half through Paul Scharner before a Louis Saha header and Leighton Baines' stoppage-time penalty gave the Toffees their first league win of the season.

But it did not come without controversy, with Wiltshire referee Lee Probert under fire from Wigan boss Roberto Martinez.

Probert had been the fourth official at Old Trafford 24 hours earlier, and was instrumental in the incident that saw Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger sent to the stands during the Gunners' 2-1 defeat by Manchester United.

Since then the Premier League referees' chief Keith Hackett has said Wenger will get an apology for the incident.

Probert booked six Wigan players this afternoon and one from Everton.

Martinez said: "It is not ideal to have that referee, but my opinion is not important. I am sure Everton will be delighted.

"The performance of the referee is something we should put aside, but maybe they should give the referee some time and space and it wasn't ideal for him to be refereeing this game.

"With their penalty, Jo was very clever and he could see the tackle coming, he left his standing leg there for the contact. I am not sure just how much contact there was.

"That is not the reason we lost. There were a couple of decisions before that, little things that allowed Everton to maintain their momentum."

Moyes, understandably, had a different view of Emmerson Boyce's tackle on Jo in the third minute of stoppage time.

The Everton manager said: "We deserved to win that one, and I feel the penalty decision was correct. Jo's leg was clipped and he went down.

"For a while I felt we were not even going to get a point. Sometimes you do not get what you deserve.

"But I felt we controlled the first half and our play improved. Wigan were very competitive.

"When you lose a couple of games like they have, the first thing you do is to make sure things tighten up, and Wigan did that and made it difficult for us.

"That penalty decision could be key to the way our season goes. We could not afford to go into the international break without a victory."

Bari held to a disappointing goalless draw

Bari's first Serie A game of the season in front of their own fans ended in disappointment as they were held to a goalless draw by Bologna.

Giampiero Ventura's side came closest to breaking the deadlock through Vitali Kutuzov in the second half, but the teams had to settle for a point each to add to the draws they picked up on the opening day of the season last weekend.

The hosts ended the game with 10 men with Ferdinando Sforzini seeing the red card deep into second-half stoppage time.

Over 25,000 fans turned out at the San Nicola to witness Bari's first home game on their return to Serie A after an eight-year absence.

By comparison, just over a year ago Bari were averaging gates of little over 3,000, but the enthusiasm for football is back in the Apulian city, particularly after a 1-1 draw at Inter Milan seven days ago.

And this enthusiasm could be seen on the field too in the early stages of the match as the home side made a bright start.

Daniele De Vezze tested Emiliano Viviano for the first time in the second minute with a shot from the edge of the penalty area which the Bologna goalkeeper was able to save low to his left.

However, Bari were unable to keep up this early pressure in hot conditions and in particular on a bone-dry pitch which their coach Ventura on the eve of the game had labelled "unplayable".

Bologna did not seem to be having as many problems coping, though, as they began to take control of the game with Francesco Valiani and Nicola Mingazzini both getting in shots on goal.

Kutuzov, whose goal earned Bari a point at the San Siro last weekend, went close to his second goal of the season on two occasions before Alessandro Gazzi's header sailed just wide of the post from Alessandro Parisi's free-kick in the last minute of the first half.

Bari debutant Ricardo Meggiorini had the first chance of the second period as the hosts started brightly once again, but he was unable to test Viviano with a shot wide of the left-hand post.

The home side really should have gone ahead in the 74th minute when Kutuzov found himself with the whole goal to aim at from Antonio Langella's pass, but he sent his shot over the crossbar when he really should have hit the target.

Bari went close to breaking the deadlock again with two minutes remaining but both Andrea Ranocchia and Leonardo Bonucci failed to hit the target.

Bari were becoming increasingly frustrated with their inability to find the breakthrough and Sforzini was shown a red card as he remonstrated with the referee deep in stoppage time.

That was the referee's last action before he put the whistle to his lips to bring an end to Bari's first Serie A game at the San Nicola in just over eight years.

Inter cruise past Milan with a 4-0 victory

Inter Milan tore city rivals AC Milan apart to move to the top of Serie A after a thumping 4-0 win on Saturday night.

Goals from Thiago Motta, Diego Milito and Maicon gave Inter a 3-0 lead at half-time before Dejan Stankovic added a fourth midway through the second half.

To round off a miserable night for the Rossoneri, they also lost Gennaro Gattuso to a red card just before the interval.

Last weekend's results had brought a chink of optimism to Milan after a lacklustre showing in pre-season.

They came into this derby knowing they could move five points clear of their rivals with a win and the packed San Siro was expectant of Leonardo's troops.

But what followed was one of their biggest ever let-downs as they returned to their pre-season ways and the ignominy of defeat to their most hated rivals.

The warning signs were there early on when Wesley Sneijder, given an immediate debut by Inter coach Jose Mourinho, brought a fine save out of Marco Storari with a shot from just outside the penalty area in the seventh minute.

And Inter looked strong in defence too with Lucio commanding his penalty area and not allowing his compatriot Pato room to test Julio Cesar, another Brazilian, in the Inter goal.

Inter showed their full strength in the move which led to Thiago's first goal since arriving from Genoa this summer.

Samuel Eto'o and Milito were both involved in the build-up to the goal with Thiago providing an unstoppable finish past Storari into his top corner in the 29th minute.

After having arguably enjoyed the better of the first half an hour, Milan could find no answer to falling behind and their heads dropped.

This is when the Nerazzurri took control and, 10 minutes before the interval, they were given the chance to double their lead when Gattuso felled Eto'o inside the penalty area and referee Nicola Rizzoli pointed to the spot.

Gattuso was fortunate not to be shown a red card then as Rizzoli only produced a yellow, although the Milan captain was not going to spend much longer on the field anyway.

Meanwhile, Milito stepped up to bury the spot-kick having apparently taken on responsibility for taking the penalties following Zlatan Ibrahimovic's departure this summer.

Gattuso had already called to be replaced after suffering an ankle injury when he launched himself into an unnecessary foul on Stankovic; a foul borne out of frustration.

Rizzoli this time had no choice but to show Gattuso the red card and send him off five minutes before half-time.

And to rub salt into the wound, Milan fell three behind just before the break when Maicon exchanged passes with Milito on his way into the penalty area before beating Storari in stoppage time to put the win beyond doubt after just 45 minutes.

Milan coach Leonardo brought Clarence Seedorf and Massimo Ambrosini on at the start of the second half with Marco Borriello and Mathieu Flamini both remaining in the dressing room.

But it was still Inter creating all the chances with Sneijder having a bit of shooting practice, but never finding the target with several distance shots.

Eto'o thought he had added a fourth in the 63rd minute, but his header was rightly ruled out for offside.

Yet a fourth goal followed just four minutes later when Stankovic tried his luck from 25 yards and beat a forlorn Storari into his top corner.

Enough damage had been done, although Stankovic and Milito both went close to adding a fifth with Storari this time able to salvage some personal pride with two good saves.

But his team's pride was well and truly demolished as Inter leapt above them to the top of Serie A in dominant fashion.
